CON BRIO MUSIC – THEORY WORKSHOP

Have you ever wondered why your favourite song sounds the way it does? Have you ever wanted to write your own song?

Con Brio’s new theory course will give you the opportunity to explore the building blocks of music. Best of all, this isn’t your standard theory class – we will be listening to and studying music of all styles, from classical to jazz to pop, in a course designed to be a fun and accessible way for everyone to learn music theory.

Beginning in February, we will be offering theory classes to all ages and levels – everyone welcome! Classes will occur weekly, at 60 minutes per class. Each week students will have the opportunity to listen to music, write their own, and talk about what makes each piece work. We are keeping classes small (6 students per level)to maintain a fun, non-competitive environment in which the teacher can spend time with each student individually, as well as teaching the group as a whole.

The course will touch on elements of music history as well as the basics of music writing. Some questions we will explore are:

• What makes a good melody?
• How can you learn to write your own melodies and understand the ones you already know?
• How do the harmonies below a melody fit into the piece?
• How can you write for different instruments?
• What is the history of each piece?

Whether you are preparing for an exam of would just like to know more about music, this is the course for you!

This course is open to all music lovers, and students from all music schools are welcome.

Classes will be taught by local composer and musician Leo Bueno.

Beginner (newer to music/no theory experience): 2:00-3:00pm
Intermediate (reads music/has a few years music experience): 3:00-4:00pm

Cost: $210 per student. NO REGISTRATION FEE.
